SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION The expedition under the joint auspices ofthe Smithsonian Institution of Washingtonand the Cuban Government spent twomonths on the coast of Western Cuba, makingan extensive biological study of the watersof that region and obtaining specimens forexhibition in the National Museum. Ex-tensive dredging operations for secm-ingmarine specimens were undertaken, and agreat many specimens were secured. The re-sults of the expedition were very successful.The collection of marine organisms, especiallj-mollusks, is particvilarly valuable. SANITARY MEASURES OF HAVANA The Department of Health of Havana hasissued stringent regulations providing that allhotels, restaurants, cafes, grocery stores andother places where food is sold shall be keptscrupulously clean in every department.Proper inspection by the department willinsure that these regulations are strictlyfollowed. The official designation of this enterprise is the National Exposition ofPanama commemorative of the dis covery of the South Seas, therefore, this event is also atribute to the memory of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the famous discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. The exhibition grounds are seventy acres in extent in the northern part of the city over-looking the Pacific, and there are to be eight exhibition buildings, a stadium, a plaza, a grandparkway, and a concourse and patio at the water side. The building to be occupied by theRepublic of Cuba has beea completed and we are al)le to show some excellent photographsof the edifice. This liuilding reflects great credit on
