Text Appearing Before Image:
f the oral cavity had been, for along time, under the care of a dentist. The dentist invariably, either throughignorance or carelessness, would not rec-ognize the etiological factor of the pa-tients oral disturbance. I will neverforget a case which indeed is a sad one: In March 1911, a young man called at myoffice, having been referred by a physician. He complained that his upper anterior teethwere sore and loose, with pus dischargingfrom the nose. He was twenty-five years ofage, head bookkeeper for a large mercantilebusiness. This man had the appearance ofcoming from a good family; he was intelli- gent, refined, courteous, and handsome. Hegave a history of having consulted a numberof dentists, being informed each time thathe was suffering from pyorrhea. He had hadthe roots scraped and the gums painted withiodin. Upon inquiry into the history of thecase he admitted that he had had a chancreabout three years ago, and that he had takentreatment for syphilis for about three months. Fig. 6.

Syphilitic destruction of nose and palate. Examination showed the septum perfor-ated, the vomer and a part of the hardpalate necrosed; the left central and lateralincisors very loose, with a considerable por-tion of the alveolar process destroyed. WhenI informed him that syphilis was the cause,he was much disturbed; but when I told himthat he was going to lose a large part ofhis palate and septum and two teeth, hewept bitterly, and between sobs he beggedpitifully for help. He offered everything hehad, if I would cure him without the lossof so much tissue. (See Fig. 6.) All this time I could not help think-ing of the faulty diagnosis, viz, that the 1312 THE DENTAL COSMOS. patient had pyorrhea! What a blot onthe good name of dentistry ! What a pitythat not one man of all the dentists hehad consulted attempted to get at thebottom of his trouble, and save him frombeing a cripple all his life. This mannow walks the streets with the stigma ofsyphilis facing his friends. Fortunately, the open
