Near to the corner-stonewas walled up the leaden box formerlyplaced under the flagstaff, which alsocontained numerous coins, documents,daily papers and other interesting mat-ters. The corner-stone was laid byMr. Wm. Neely Johnson. After somespeechifying, Mr. Hossefross smashed abottle of champagne on the stone. Thechronicler of the event in the AltaCalifornia thus proceeds: All formality an interesting tale by some historians.This year—55 — was remarkable forthe number of new engine-houses erectedby the different companies. By the end of 1855 the Fire Depart-ment was in a splendid condition ofefficiency. For the years 1853, 1854and 1855 the expenditure of the depart-ment was $105,965, or an average of;^35,32i per year.
