to the purchase of suitable medals to re-ward firemen who have performed anymeritorious service, at personal risk oftheir own lives, whilst in the dischargeof their duty. The Chief Engineer ofthe fire department and the Mayor of thecity are the custodians of the fund. SinceChief Scannelis death, this medal hasbeen awarded four times. The Board of Fire Commissioners, withthe laudable desire of placing on per-manent record the name of the personwho has earned this medal, or who hasperformed any act of valor deserving ofpublic recognition, have established aRoll of Honor of the San FranciscoFire Department. It is a large and hand-somely bound volume, of chaste andelaborate design, and constructed withan idea of its permanency. In the open-ing pages the following resolutions occur: Whereas, the Board of Fire Commissioners,composed of the following gentlemen, to wit,Colin M. Boyd, John W. McDonald, JosephMarshall, Frank T. Edwards and George T.Bohen, at a meeting of said Commissioners held

134 SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN on the 15th day of December, 1898, received acommunication from the Chief Engineer of theFire Department, D. T. Sullivan, calling theattention of the Commissioners to the fact thatno record is kept by the Trustees of theScannell Medal Fund, of which he is a mem-ber, of the names of the recipients of the ScannellMedal, nor is any record made or kept of thenames of other members of the Fire Departmentwho may perform acts of bravery while in thedischarge of their duty, and therein suggestingand recommending that a Roll of Honor shouldbe established for the inscription of the names ofthe recipients of the Scannell, or other specialmedal for bravery, and of others who may per-form acts of valor deserving public recognitionwhose names may be ordered inscribed thereonby the Board of Fire Commissioners, and Whereas, the secretary was at said meetinginstructed to have prepared a suitable Roll ofHonor in accordance therewith, therefore, be it Resohed, that the names of
