En^Tiie (?o.-o SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN 127 to turn out to a fire at a fruit store at thecorner of Second and Folsom streets.The fire was speedily extinguished by asinglestream from Engine CompanyNo.4.During the first month of its existence,the department turned out to twenty-twofires, aggregating a loss in the destructionof property and goods of $43,550. Thefirst big conflagration the department hadto combat was the burning of the Cos-mopolitan Hotel, April 24, 1867, aboutfour months after the department hadcommenced active operations. The lossby this fire was estimated at $150,000.The fire was fought with all the enginesthen in service. The fourth and fifthstories were partly destroyed, and thefire was checked in the third story. Atthis tire the men were on continuous dutyfar six hours.(When the paid department first wentinto operation the apparatus did not givewarning of its approach, as no bells orother contrivance were attached.
