WILLIAM S. OBRIEN Foreman California Engine Company No. 4- 1855-56 the infant commonwealth. He was anative of Ireland, and was born in theyear 1826. As soon as the news of thegreat gold discoveries reached his nativeplace he took passage for California, the late J. C. Flood, under the firmname of Flood & OBrien. The laterconnection of this firm with the develop-ment of the Comstock lode, from whichthey accumulated millions, is known to SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN 71 the civilized world, and the names ofFlood, OBrien, Mackey and Fair, theBonanza mao;nates, are household wordsin California and Nevada. Mr. OBrien was one of the earlymembers of California Engine Company,No. 4, and served as foreman in 1855-56.He died at San Rafael on the 2d of May,1878, aged 52 years, and just in theprime of life and usefulness.
