carpenters, or blacksmiths, whatpossible better preparation could there be thanelementary instruction in natural science ?Who would do such efficient police service, sayin the matter of the Colorado beetle, as well- into a recent debate on education in the Houseof Commons, a training in the principles ofnatural history and chemistry forms, togetherwith arithmetic, the best preliminary prepara-tion. For the general culture of the faculties, or asa preparation for the general business of life, there can be no better preparation than asound training in the elements of naturalscience, while even in the matter of moraltraining we submit that the reverent studyof Gods works must be far more beneficialthan the study of mans words, howeverjfullof wisdom they may be. Oh ! but, somemay say, how is all this to be accomplished ?Your theories may be unexceptionable,) buthow do they work in practice ? Fig. 6.—DIOSCOREA BULBlrERA, 50 THE GARDENERS CHRONICLE. (July 14, 1877. which the older leaders of this journal arefamiliar—that of the village school establishedby the zeal and wisdom of the late Rev. ProfessorHenslow. We cannot all have the samephysical strength and mental power that hehad, but we may all in our degree imitate hissystem of educating and training the childrenof the labouring classes of the rural districts. We figure a very old garden plant—it wasintroduced as long ago as 1692—for the sake of illus-trating a very beautifal and readily grown climbingplant. DIOSCOREA euleifera (figs. 5 and 6), is, likeits congeners, of twining habit, with bold foliage, andelegant drooping racemes of greenish flowers. In theaxils of the leaves in the species figured are formedsmall fleshy tubers by means of which the plant i.spropagated. Tiiey were removed before the speci-men was sent to the artist for figuring, hence they donot appear in his drawing. We saw the plant latelyin
