The harvest of certain articleswas a small one in iSSo, and with small crops willoften come a want of germinating power in the seeds,which is invariably an outcome of the cause, orcauses, which led to the scarcity. Beets, Carrots,Endives, Lettuces, Onions, and Radishes, need to besown thickly; and the patience of the gardener mustbe exercised while he waits for a fair growth. Seedsthat are harvested through bad weather germinateslowly and irregularly, and more than ordinary careand patience is requisite. The wholesale seedsmencarefully test the percentage of growth of all articlesthat come into their warehouses before being sent totheir customers, and a second trial is often given.
