Text Appearing Before Image:
of crimson flowersare capable of lasting a considerable time.During the next few weeks, the species willbe in bloom in most large gardens. Our illus-tration at fig. 122 (from a photograph kindlysent us by Mr. Varmar) shows how admirably theplant is cultivated in the Glasnevin Botanic select rather than collect, but we have in thehardy Cypripedia a complete set of excellentgarden plants that are perhaps somewhat difficultto grow well, but which are quite worthy of thetrouble their cultivation involves. All are in-teresting on account of their structure, and mostof them are neat plants, with flowers that may bedescribed as of pleasing colouring and daintyshape. If open air cultivation be preferred, andthis is by far the best method for the stronger-growing species, the site to choose for them shouldbe cool and moist, with good drainage and shelterfrom drying winds; a hollow wherein rain-watercould gather, depressions at the base of rockeriesand other sheltered places suggest themselves;
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 122.—primula japonica, associated with cypripedium spectabile and the lady fern. under cultivation. It is closaly allied in floralstructure to E. myoporoides, but differs markedlyin habit; this is partly owing to the leaves beinggrouped towards the ends of the branches inE. affinis, while they are more persistent inE. myoporoides. The principal differential cha-racters lie in the more linear leaves, which areconcave above, with slightly incurved margins,the smaller flowers, and the ovary, which is moretnarrowed above the loculi, and rather shortlybeaked.
