He summoned to thetask one of his ablest lieutenants, a man who, perhaps morefittingly than any other, may be thought of as the embodi-ment of the new spirit of France, sobered and transfiguredby the fiery ordeal. General Petain, the hero of Verdun, was then approach-ing sixty years of age. He was colonel of the 33d regimentof infantry at Arras when the war began and was imme-diately put in command of a brigade which distinguisheditself by its fierce rear-guard actions during the retreat fromCharleroi to the Marne. Just before the Battle of theMarne Petain received command of the Sixth InfantryDivision.
