He remained about these parts until early in the Winter, when, hear-ing nothing from the Griffin, he collected all the men—thirty workingmen and three monks—and started again upon his great undertaking. By a short portage they passed to the Illinois or Kankakee, called bythe Indians, Theakeke, wolf, because of the tribes of Indians calledby that name, commonly known as the Mahingans, dwelling there.
