Vegetablesand clothing were largely distributed through the regions adjoining the THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY. 87 lakes by steamers from the Ohio towns. There are men now living inIllinois who came to the state when barely an acre was in cultivation,and a man now prominent in the business circles of Chicago looked overthe swampy, cheerless site of that metropolis in 1818 and went southward into civilization.
