bej^ond m\ reading, to tellwho it was that each was intended to immortalize. But the wearershave all, long since, gone on a longer journey than that which broughtthem here. A wall on the east side of this many-pillared square space runs acrossaisles and nave alike; the former ending here, though the nave reallyextends be3ond this line to the east end of the church, which is roundedinto a projecting half-circle, or apse: the secret chamber of the Greekaltar and choir, for in Greek worship both are hidden from the con-gregation by a screen. This apsidal end, v/ith two similar semicirclesat the two ends of the transept, gives the shape of a Latin cross to thewhole building. The ends show some remains of very old mosaics,which merit close study as illustrations of ancient Christian ideas. Inthat at the south side, Christ is entering into Jerusalem, riding on anass, and accompanied by a disciple, the other figures of His escortbeing destroyed.
