the Prince Piccolomini, Siena. No. 29SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY English : 1753—1839 THE HON. MBS. VERNON Height, 30 inches; width, 25 inches Three-quarter length portrait of a handsome matron withbrown eyes and dark eyebrows, small month and very rosycheeks, and the suggestion of a comfortable double chin notunbecoming. Her brown hair is wound about her head, withcurls protruding over eyes and temples. Her right arm,akimbo, brings the hand into view; the left arm hangs at herside and the hand is not in the picture. She wears a loose whitegown, girdled high in the effect of pronounced breast plates,with square-cut corsage, and gauze insertion terminating inthe lace collar enfolding her neck, and shoulder sleeves whichcontinue in gauze over the forearms, whose pink flesh is re-vealed through the transaprency. She is seen against a back-ground of tree trunks and foliage, and a conventional land-scape, in amber and olive tones relieved with red and blue. From the Royal Academy of 1816; Xo. 83.

On the right Pharoah in gorgeous helmet, brilliant redrobes and riding a huge sorrel horse is accompanied by lancersand halberdiers, afoot and ahorseback, who press around him,the two nearest mounted respectively on a white horse and ablack one. Over the gray-helmeted soldiers is to be seen asmall forest of upright lances, representing the additionaltroops coming up in the background; and leading on ahead atthe left is a host of horsemen on the way to the bed of the sea,beyond which are to be seen city buildings on a hill.
