s a right to be placed on apar with our Lincoln. THE COUNT AND THE PROFESSOR MEMBERS of faculty split over the Tolstoy discus-sion is the startling headline in the New YorkTimes. This is, as Mark Twain said about the report ofhis death, a great exaggeration. No members of theColumbia faculty have split any farther than the ordi-nary opening of the jaws and not many of them havegone so far as that. The facts of the matter are simplythese: The International Club, a cosmopolitan associ-ation of students meeting in one of the university halls,invited Count Ilya Tolstoy to address them, but Profes-sor Prince, head of the Slavonic department, interposeda veto on the ground that Tolstoys opinions were cal-culated to weaken the spirit of patriotism. The Countcountered by retorting that the Professor talked Rus-sian badly. We are not able to substantiate or to dis-prove either allegation. The lecture he was to give at Columbia on the life andworks of his father has been given without objectionat Petrograd and Princeton, both of which places aresupposed to-be stricter than Columbia. Obviously thisis not a case of restriction of academic freedom. On thecontrary, a Columbia professor has too much freedomwhen he can without consultation or authorization debarfrom the campus anybody he does not like. This is theliberum veto that brought about the downfall of Polandby enabling any noble to annul any legislation.
