Born in 1863, General Li is a nativeof Hupeh, possessing the true charac-teristics of his fellow provincials—great tenacity of purpose, unexampledbravery and an aptitude for military-achievements. Having naturally chosenthe military career as his profession,,coming as he did from such a martiaLprovince, young Li Yuan-hung enteredthe famous Peiyang Naval College, andafter a course of six years graduatedwith honor.
