Theprice has been rising, and on the 22dit was 26% cents a pound. Not verylong ago planters were urged to holdtheir cotton for 20 cents, those figuresnot having been reached. The upwardmovement is due not to speculation butto trade demand and the prospect ofa small crop. Our own mills are usinglarge quantities. Supplies abroad aresmall. An advance of $18 a bale, to40 cents a pound, at Liverpool on the19th, caused the closing of the Ex-change there on the following day.It may be reopened soon, but sales forfuture delivery probably will be for-bidden. For lack of the raw material,working time in the English mills maybe reduced. Employees regard thesituation with anxiety. It is said thattheir wages have been increased byonly 25 per cent., while the cost offood has been doubled.
