road to success; that manycollege graduates have never beentaught how to work, how to think, howto eat, how to save money, how to findthemselves, how to become good citizens, how to do much of anything worthwhile; that, accordingly, the collegesystem of America has to be improvedif we are going to face like men theworld-battle of industry and economyjust ahead; that parents, in view oftheir responsibility, are the most ig-norant members of a community, andneed high-power education more thantheir children do; that preachers, teachers and doctors in the UnitedStates are poorly, feebly and fallacious-ly taught and equipped for their lifework; that marriage, the most vitaland subliminal experience on earth, isthe most neglected and abused; thatthe real hero is the man willing toface the truth about himself, and eagerand brave and strong enough to makehimself over, at any cost to his prideor personal comfort; that happinessbelongs to every one by the resourceof Nature and the intent of God.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE MADONNA AND CHILD THE great event of the year in American art has beenthe unveiling of the new mural paintings by John S.Sargent in the Boston Public Library. For somemonths now the artist has been engaged in finishingthis work and providing an adequate setting. This substan-tially completes the great scheme for a consistent muraldecoration of the library arranged for by the architects,Messrs. McKim, Mead & White, something like twenty-fiveyears ago. It was in 1895 that the first decorations were putin place: a section of the Abbey frieze for the DeliveryRoom, The Quest of the Holy Grail, and the first install-ment of the Sargent decorations. Some years later the Abbeywork was completed, a second instalment of the Sargentdecorations was put in place, and the great series for thestaircase hall by Puvis de Chavannes was finished. Althothree panels yet remain to be filled by Mr. Sargent, theeffect of his work in the large staircase hall of the SpecialLibraries floor is already on
