. If she felt she had nothing left to livefor, Roberta never said so. She went back toher lonely apartment, to cook her own meals,to have a cup of tea in midafternoon, to helpRicky two or three times a week, and to takeSunday lunch now and then with Matthewand Elizabeth. She did not like the way Elizabeth lookedthat winter. Her skin showed a waxy color, and she spent a good bit of time on thecouch in the living room. She scorned theidea of a doctor, however, and both Courtneyand his father were too absorbed to noticeher failing energy. For business was still bad. In all his worries that fall Matthew foundhis real relaxation with Courtneys children.Quite often he would drop in at the house onhis way home in the evenings. He had hisown whistle for the children, and they wouldcome tumbling down the stairs to him. Theywould hang around him, both talking atonce. Peggy was a tall slip of a girl now. She hadput her dolls away and lived a secret life ofher own, in books and at Saturday movies.
Text Appearing After Image:
Hows my girl? Going to be a young lady.before we know it, isnt she? She was older for her years than Jeff, lessheadstrong and difficult to manage. Overher books and in the movies she alreadydreamed romantic dreams, and Ricky, watch-ing her, was often worried. I wish shed be more practical, she saidto Hilda. She has her head in the cloudsmost of the time. Yet Ricky was happier than she had beenfor a long time. There had been a change inCourtney since his return from Europe. Hewas more gentle with the children, moretender with her. Elizabeth was still not well by the follow-ing summer. Matthew suggested she go toBar Harbor, but she refused. Let me alone,Matt, she said pettishly. Im only tired.Dont bother about me. She seemed a little better that fall. WhenRicky went to see her she was often up anddressed, although her color was still bad. Butthere was nothing wrong with Elizabethsmind, or with her sharp eyes. Whats happened to Court? she askedone day. To Court? Nothing that I know of. H
