Description
English: Title: The Maroon Bells, the bare peaks to the left, reflecting into Maroon Lake just outside Aspen, considered one of the, if not the most-coveted photographic spot in Colorado

Physical description: 1 photograph : digital, tiff file, color.

Notes: Purchase; Carol M. Highsmith Photography, Inc.; 2015; (DLC/PP-2015:068).; Forms part of: Gates Frontiers Fund Colorado Collection within the Carol M. Highsmith Archive.; The Maroon Bells are two peaks (Maroon and North Maroon) in the Elk Mountains, separated by about a third of a mile. Both peaks are what locals call "fourteeners," higher than 14,000 feet elevation. Unlike other mountains in the Rockies that are composed of granite and limestone, the Bells are composed of metamorphic sedimentary mudstone that has hardened into rock over millions of years. Mudstone is weak and fractures readily, giving rise to dangerously loose rock along almost any route. The mudstone is responsible for the Bells' distinctive maroon color. The formation got its name when early white explorers likened the peaks' shape to bells.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; Credit line: Gates Frontiers Fund Colorado Collection within the Carol M.
