rds are spoken, an-other prayer; and then In the nameof the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the man goes beneath the water.Struggling and gasping, the penitentemerges, perhaps waving his arms andsmiting his hands together in uncon-trollable emotion, while he tries to joinin the hymn of rejoicing, or theshouts, which are raised by all. Thisceremony fully means to the man thathis past is forgiven, his sins washedaway, that his life begins at that mo-ment, and that he can enter upon itwith every hope and security. We look into thedepths ; the course of the creek is visi-ble through the shadows in the gorge ;towards the west the long low wall ofGhost Mountain touches the sky. Onewalks, shod with silence, over a thick car-pet of golden needles. There is a veri-table Lovers Walk through a miniaturegrove of cedars, where only red-birdsand mocking-birds, wood-wrens, and thrashers intrude to break the still-ness. It is very lovely — the gorge onone side of the path, with the music ofwind and water coming softly throughthe myriad leaves; and on the left, ahigh rounded hill, across whose grassesthe wind sweeps continually from far-offmountains. From this Mars Hill, one may looksouthward to the great purple shoulderof Thunder Ridge, and beyond, to thesharp oblique cone of Otter Peak. Theseare just across the valley, where James River
