we likewise met with it. It is, in all probability, thesmoother, supposed variety of C. imnctata, mentioned by Hookerin his Flora. The branches are reddish brown, the leaves nearly as entire asthose of the Apple Tree, except in /3, where they are slightlylobed; beneath very smooth, slightly pubescent above, acute andrather sharply serrate, with long spines. The peduncles and calyxperfectly smooth, the segments of the latter mere broad, obtusedentures. The flowers are white and smaller than in the pre-ceding. The berries are also black, and jDossess nearly the samesweet and rather insipid taste of the Common Haw, (G. oxyacantha.) LANCE-LEAVED HAWTHORN. Crat^gus arborescens. Crataegus ArboreseeiLs Lance letured- kcwifwriv. -d-H-xier arhorescent LANCE-LEAVED HAWTHORN. 161 According to Elliott, this species becomes a tree of twenty tothirty feet in height, with spreading branches. The fruit isglobose, quite small, and red. Of the quahty of the wood nothingis yet known; but nearly all the arborescent species are of slowgrowth, and have whitish, close-grained, very hard, and durablewood; that of the Common Hawthorn (G. oxyacantJia) is tough,and in England is used occasionally for axle-trees and handlesof tools. The Lance-leaved Thorn of Mr. Elliott was found on theborders of the Ogeechee Kiver, in Georgia, near Fort Argyle, andnear New Orleans, and in Texas by Drummond and Berlandier.It is without armature. The leaves are lanceolate, acute at eachend, deeply serrated, smooth both above and beneath, exceptsome small tufts of hairs at the divisions of the veins, sometimesslightly lobed toward the summit, (though not at all in our speci-men.)
