According to Oviedo, the Spaniards, when in want ofpen, ink, and paper, used to employ the wide leaves of theCoccoloba, writing on them with the point of a bodkin. Prom its maritime predilection, it is known in the Bahamasby the name of the MiiKjrove GmpG Tree. The fruit, disposedill long racemose clusters, is composed of pear-shaped, purpleberries, about the size of cherries; they have a refreshing,agreeal^le, subacid taste, with a thin pulp, are esteemed whole-some, and brought to the table as a dessert, for which they arein considerable demand; but if the stone be kept long in theiiioiilh it becomes very astringent to the taste. The branches are smooth and gray, but in old trunks the barkis ron-li and full of clefts. The leaves are dilated, round, andoMiisc, with a narrow sinns at the base, and upon very shortptiolcs.
