Y. 188 THE OOLOdlST WITH THE BIRDS IN THE GEOR-GIAN BAY DISTRICT It was with pleasant anticipationthat I left the train on the 6th day ofJune of this year to change to amotor car which was to carry me tomy destination, where I was to meetmy friend, Dr. Harrington. Each year we have spent a fewweeks in June together on the southshore of Georgian Bay. Our objectin visiting this part of the countryhas been, and is, the study of birdlife. My spirits were somewhat cooledby the information that there wasstill lots of ice in the Bay, and whena mile from the beach, this fact wasbrought home to us by the chilly air.The bay was covered with drift ice asfar as the eye could see. Instead ofseeing the usual large flocks of Her-ring and Ring-billed Gulls, Commonand Caspian Terns and an occasionalLoon, there were only a few scatteredgulls.
