Hammond, Southwestern, wasrecognized when the Associated Pressnamed him on the first string of itsLittle All-America, a selection de-signed to give recognition to those smallcollege stars who, because they are inminor league competition, have al-most been obscured. Hammonds abili-ties were spotted by George Halas, presi-dent of the Chicago Bears professionalteam, and he has become the first col-legian to sign a professional contract for1937. An indication of how highly theBears think of Hammond is seen in thefact that after repeated telegrams andphone calls failed to get action, he wasgiven an all-expense trip from Memphisto Chicago to talk things over. Two of these men, Colmore andWeaver, were captains last season, andtwo more, Chesbro and Popovich, willlead their teams in 1937. The Associated Press selection in-cluded Chesbro, Colmore, Frye, Haines,Hammond, Popovich, Scheyer, Terry,and Weaver.
