In the midstof his task, the Re-gents had asked himto organize, virtuallyfrom scratch, a newrecords system forthe universitys 60,-000 alumni. Becausesuch records wouldbe of incalculablevalue in prosecutingthe Union campaign,he hesitated to refuse.Yet he knew it wouldbe physically impossible to carry on bothjobs. An assistant, unless he were justthe right one, would only be a liability.Then he remembered Butts. For twodays he kept the wires to Springfieldhot and on the third day Butts arrivedin Madison to begin, as Alumni Re-corder, a still uninterrupted adminis-trative connection with the universityin which he had made undergraduatehistory. Butts was only well started on thepainstaking job of organizing the gradu-ate records when Bollard left to jointhe presidents staff at the University
