Fire In-surance Company. Sub-sequently he was elect-ed Secretary and Treas-.urer, and in 1882 he was elected President, which oflice he■resigned in 1887. He reiuained a Director of the companyuntil his death. Mr. Haines lield several other positions of trust and re-sponsibility, and was the execiitor of a number of largeestates for well-known families in Newark. He was a manof quiet and retiring disposition, but well known for hisstrong integrity in business matters. He was for manyyears a Director in the Newark Savings Institutiou and aDirector in the National State Bank. He was one of thefounders and for many years Treasurer of the Home for theFriendless. For a long period he was Treasurer of theEssex County Bible Society, and a life Director in that or-ganization and in the American Tract Society, in both ofwhich he was very much interested, as well as in a numberof other charitable and religious institutions. At his deathhe was one of the oldest members of the Third Presbyterian
