a usually at about an inch below thesymphysis; but, according to measurements made by Mr. Thomp-son, the latter distance may vary from seven-eighths to an inchand a quarter; a difference of some importance as affecting thesub-pubic curve of the urethra. From the urethral opening twoprocesses are sent off, one anteriorly to inclose the bulb, and theother posteriorly to become continuous with the fibrous capsulewhich surrounds the prostate gland. The inferior margin, or baseol the deep perineal fascia is directed towards the rectum, and sendsoft a thm fascia which covers the inferior surface of the levatoram muscle; its anterior layer winds round the transversus perineiand, thus doubled on itself, becomes continuous with the superficialperineal fascia. 16 242 STRICTURE OF THE URETHRA. In accordance withfrequent usage, it alone is intended by the term superficial fasciaof the perineum. This fibrous structure corresponds in its generaldirection with the deep perineal fascia just described, but is situatedupon a more external plane; behind the transversus perinei muscleit is continuous with the anterior layer of the latter fascia; at thesides, it is attached to the rami of the pubic and ischiatic bones;while in front it joins the dartos of the scrotum, the sheath of thepenis, and the abdominal fascia.
