re Diller it is a good timeto. canvass the country by means ofthis magazine for a general round upof the Dillers, that their kinship or lackof it may become known and throwlight upon the whole group, more orless complex, now included under thename Diller in America. Wherever the name Diller may haveoriginated, it has the same form inEnglish and German. The Englishform is of course our own. The Ger-man form is illustrated in Germanpublications. The Dillers in Germanyhave not been prolific writers, for ac- cording to the Kayser Yollstandiges Biicher Lexicon from 1750 to 1900there was in all that time only onesmall book published in Germany by aDiller. The book is entitled Wie e.Mensch e. TigerWurde by its author.\Y. Diller. It was printed in 1808. andreprinted in 1000. In Minerva, the Jahrbuch derGelehrteu Welt, ATI Jahrgang 1897-1808. page 050. it appears that EFrieh V. Diller was a professor in theUniversity of Vienna. Ringwalt in his pamphleton The Diller Family (1877), Pa§e 5>reports a Professor Diller in the Uni-versity of Heidelberg, but as yet Ihave not been able to get an accountof him. Professor Fuld (this magazine, Oct.1909. p. 524) gives an interesting ac-count of the derivation of the nameDiller. He regards it as most frequent-ly German and derived from Dille, theMiddle High. German word for board.It is of interest to recall and recordhere also in this connection a letter(January 9, 1909) from my dear oldfriend and teacher, Professor Rosen-busch of the University of Heidelberg,who writes (translated) The nameDiller is assuredly German and maybe connected with the small river Dill. rising in the Westerwald and enteringinto the Lahn at Wetzlar, or with theplant dill, an umbellifera, Anethumgraveolens Linne, which is cultivatedin many districts.
