It was begun in 1727 and finished,by the raising of the steeple, in 1754. Itschime of bells is among the oldest on this sideof the Atlantic. On the tenor is inscribed,Christ Church, Philadelphia. ThomasLester and Thomas Peck, of London, madeus all. When the British troops tookPhiladelphia, these bells, like others in thecity, were removed to prevent them fallinginto the hands of the enemy and being castinto cannon. They returned with the pa-triots, and have remained to peal forth theirmusic ever since. In their time they havesummoned to worship some of the greatestmen our country has produced. Washingtonwas a regular attendant at Christ Churchwhen President of the United States, andmany of the heroes and patriots of thetimes that tried mens souls rest in itsvaults. STATE HOUSE AND INDEPENDENCE HA.LL. PHILADELPHIA. 65 Street, between Fifth and Sixth.It was commenced in 1729 andcompleted in 1734. This build-ing has been so often described,that almost every school-boy isfamiliar with its history. It wasin it that the Declaration of Inde-pendence was considered andadopted, and from its portals itwas proclaimed. In it Washing-ton received his commission ascommander-in-chief of the Ameri-can army; in it the Articles ofConfederation were adopted in1778; and in it the Constitutionof the United States was framedin 1787. Almost every nameand every incident connectedwith the birth of the nation isassociated with this edifice. Itis a shrine which hundreds visitdaily, and its sacredness must in-crease as experience demonstratesthe wisdom of those who, withinits walls, perfected a system ofgovernment by the people andfor the people.
