point in the alignment will be on the downsabove Eregli, where the Chakit-su takes its rise, andwhere the altitude above the sea is about 4500 feet.Having pierced the Bulgar Dagh by means of thisravine, the old road turns to the right, being con-fronted by a secondary range through which theChakit-su makes its way by a canon so narrow andprecipitous that, in all human probability, it wasnever traversed by man until Mr. Mavrogodato, theengineer of the Bagdad Railway, cut a path throughit recently in order to find a route for the line. Theancient road, instead of attempting the dangerouscanon, turns to the right, mounting up again to thewatershed between the Chakit-su and a tributary ofthe ancient Cydnus, or River of Tarsus. Following the tributary of the Cydnus the road isable to pierce the secondary range of the Taurus bya beautiful gorge, not so magnificent as the cafion ofthe Chakit-su, but still grand enough in its way,the narrowest part being known to history as theCilician Gates.
