The Plaza Hotel, which was designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem and Ahmet Ertuğ, was built between 1985-87 on land that was formerly occupied by the Tennis, Fencing and Mountaineering Club (TED). The hotel was proposed by Bedrettin Dalan who had supplied the order for TED to be demolished during his term as mayor of İstanbul. The Plaza Hotel was designed in stark contrast to the more prevelant architecture styles of the period. It consists of modernist lines featured across curtain walls, but also comprises “Turkish House” details, which were manifestated by Sedad Hakkı Eldem himself. The Grand Hyatt Hotel from 1993, located in the same area, shares a similar architectural language with Eldem and Ertuğ’s design.

Bedrettin Dalan’ın İstanbul belediye başkanlığı döneminde imara açılan Tenis Eskrim ve Dağcılık Kulübü arazisine yapılacak otel için geliştirilen önerilerden biri Plaza Oteli’dir. 1985-1987 yıllarında Sedad Hakkı Eldem ve Ahmet Ertuğ ortaklığında tasarlanan otel, dönem mimarlığının giydirme cephe sistemli modüler tasarım akımına zıtlık teşkil eder. Masif tek bir kütle şeklinde önerilen Plaza Oteli, detaylarda, Eldem’in manifestolaştırdığı “Türk Evi” karakteristikleri barındırır. 1993’te inşası tamamlanan ve hâlen aynı arazide yer alan Grand Hyatt Oteli, biçimsel bağlamda Eldem-Ertuğ tasarımıyla aynı dili konuşmaktadır.
