the season, and are watched bythe sport-loving public in fairly large numbers. Mowbray Park, on the East Brisbane tram route, consists ofover 12 acres. Here there are bowling rinks, tennis courts, andcroquet greens, a bush-house, band rotunda (in which one of thelocal bands plays regularly). Flower beds have been laid out,and these, together with the avenue of trees, the verdant grassylawns, and the charming effect lent to the scene by the BrisbaneEiver in the background, make this Park an ideal spot forpleasure-seekers. A short distance awray is Norman Park, and on Highgate Hill(off Gladstone road) there is Highgate Hill Park. 12 THE POCKET BRISBANE. Local Governing Bodies. There are two City Councils in the capital—Brisbane andSouth Brisbane—each of which are vested with governing powersunder the provisions of the Local Authorities Act. In additionto these, there are, within the metropolitan area, five town orborough councils (each with its own mayor), and twelve shirecouncils.
