eU, Bart., F.E.S., F.G.S.) In consequence of reading a notice in the 6th volume of the * Intel-lectual Observer, p. 461, of what I presume to have been a com-munication from Dr. Haast to the Geological Society, in reference tothe formation of lake-basins in this country, and of my inabihty tosubscribe to the views of Dr. Haast, I venture to submit my reasonsfor dissenting from them. My observations have been chiefly directed to the great mountain-system named by me the Spencer Mountains, which occupies thecentre of the block of country constituting the Provinces of Nelsonand Marlborough, in the Middle Island. The highest point of therange is Mount Franklin, estimated at 10,000 feet, whilst around itare several lower peaks, averaging from 7000 to 8000 feet. A number of the largest rivers in the northern part of the island 1866.) ,./ ^ CLARENCE DILLON 256 PBOCEBDINGB OF THB GEOLOGICAL 80CIETY. (Fcb. 7, have their sources in these mountains, flowing from them to thenorth, south, east, and west. Amongst the rivers on the northernside of the range is the Buller or Eotoiti flowing out of Lake Arthur, and the Eoturoa flowing out of Lake Howick. On the south side ofMount Franklin is the River Waiau or Dillon, and the Clarence, whichflows out of Lake Tennyson. It is chiefly to the above-named lakesand the valleys of the rivers that I shall refer. A line of road leads from the town of Nelson, in Blind Bay, to aplace called the Old Pass, nearly due south of Ben Nevis, andcontinues thence past Lake Arthur and along the course of theE-otoiti and Buller rivers to the junction of the Eoturoa with thelatter. If from this point a line be drawn to the source of theTodmor river (a feeder of the Motueka) and continued down theeastern bank of the latter, it will again reach the sea. Stretching along the northern bank of the Eotoi
