o confirm thisimpression, and to show that the whole deposit is a shingle-bankwhich may have accumulated within a comparative^^ short spaceof time. The lenticular patches of the dark-brown ferruginousgravel proved to be even more variable than before, and they wereseen to j)ass both into the sandy clay below and into the less clayeydeposit above. Large flints and waterworn pieces of Wealden sand-stone were still observed scattered irregularly through the linermaterial. The characteristic subangular flints were also foundat intervals in the basal sandy clay. More interesting, however, was the discovery in this layer of numerous large elongated flintsand pieces of Wealden sandstone, witli their long axis more or lessnearly vertical. The evidence of Hood-action thus became complete. 1 Q. J. G. S. vol. Ixx (1914) p. 82- Ibid. vol. Ixxi (1915) p. 147. Q. J. G. S. No. 289. r DE. A. SMITH WOOBWAEi) OlS A (vol. Thisspecimen, which is con-spicuously different fromthe other flints and verylittle stained, may havebeen used by man as ahammer-stone (text-fig.1). It measures nearly13 centimetres in lengthby 95 cm. in width, and about 75 cm. inmaximum thickness. The largest face (C),which is almost flat, hasbeen produced by coarseflaking, and bears marksof much battering roundthe edge, especially atone angle (x). The op-jDosite large face (B) iscovered for the greaterpart by the originalcrust of the flint-nodule,but is strongly batteredalong the two cross-ridges (x) and one con-necting edge, from whichlateral flakes have beenstruc
