TH NOTES OF REFERENCE. On the evening before lie leaves Cologne, the Traveller will do well to scanwell the Map of that portion of the Rhine which is best worth knowing. He canthen arrange his plans, and decide at what points he will stop. Bonn should be thefirst, in order that he may visit the environs of that city ; Coblentz the next, fromwhence he may, if he has time and inclination, make a voyage up the Moselle :above Coblentz, almost every spot at which the steamer touches is worthexploring, and certainly those who make the Rhine the object of their tour shouldsee it thoroughly. For this purpose it is perhaps the best plan to pass up theriver from Bonn to Mayence in the steamers, thus viewing the scenery from thedeck, and on returning to forsake the vessel between Bingen and Coblentz, andtravel along the banks. 124 THE RHINE BOOK.
