They come inprocessions of hundreds, and some-times thousands; are of variousgrades, but mostly — indeed, almostwholly—peasants. They are constantly arriving, pour- ing in at the several gates of the city in an almost continual stream, accompanied by priests,banners, and crosses, and alternately singing and praying. They are many of them heavilyladen, their packs on their backs, their bright brass pans, pitchers, and tea-kettles of all shapes intheir hands, or slung on their arms, while their fingers are busily employed with their beads.Wayworn and footsore, fatigued and hungry, they yet pursue their toilsome march, intent uponthe attainment of the one object of their pilgrimage. There was,this year, processions from Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Hungary and even Switzerland and Italy, and during the whole of their jour-neys the pilgrims sing and pray almost con-tinually. The accomplishment of their pil-grimages entitles them, by payment of a smalloffering, to certain absolutions and indulgences.The pure-minded peasant girl seeks remissionof sins, the foodless peasant a liberty to eatwhat the expenses of this pilgrimage will per-haps deprivehim of themeans of ob-taining.
