(we could already distinguishits bananas and palm-trees), it was decided that we shouldleave these inhospitable savages to themselves. We weresoon in front of the next hamlet, whence a friendly greetingreached us over the water, but between us and themstretched a terrible line of rocks and breakers that took usa whole hour to cross, the men having to get into thewater and drag the boat along by main force.
