Mostof those present with-drew, when the Senatorproposed a vote, interms that reservedthe rights of the pon-tifical power. ^ Thissolution softened thetemper of those whoopposed the project ;and the erection of thefountain was voted bythirty-five to twenty.^ The transformationof the Senatorial palacewas completed un-der the pontificate ofClement VIII.
