h a military clothing foradmirals, captains, commanders, and lieutenants; andjudging it also necessary that persons acting as midshipmenshould likewise have a uniform clothing, in order to theircarrying the appearance which is necessary to distinguishtheir class, to be in the rank of gentlemen, and give thembetter credit and figure in executing the commands of theirsuperior officers, it was ordered that no commissioned officeror midshipman was from that time to presume to wear anyother uniform than that which properly belonged to his rank.Patterns of the garments thus prescribed were lodged at theNavy Office and at the several dockyards for inspection,^ but noregulations were issued describing the exact form of the dress,and no patterns were sent abroad. LJi THE SEAMANS DRESS 351 also, was restricted to commissioned officers and midshipmen,and it was not for nearly forty years that the warrant officers,which rank included masters, surgeons, pursers, gunners,boatswains, and carpenters, received a uniform dress. Norwas any uniform prescribed for the seamen, but from thistime onwards blue and white were the colours more frequentlyaffected by everybody in the sea service. In the portraits of the officers of the middle of theeighteenth century the very gorgeous and elaborate full-dress uniform of 1748 is shown, and it seems likely that theofficers grumbled at the additional expense, for in less thantwenty years this full dress was ordered to be discontinued, andwhat was known as the frock uniform clothing became thecustomary dress. A little later this was made full dress, an undress * uniform being at the same time ordered.
