Text Appearing Before Image:
My Bujf PhiBup Qibhs ILLUSTRATED BIT W. H. D. KOERNER them, and was only guarded in my behavior to thisman whom I was bound to meet with a certain civil-ity owing to my position in Constantinople. He wasdrinking champagne now at fifteen Turkish pounds—about three English pounds—a bottle, and helpinghis guests to it lavishly. You drink nothing, little princess, he said to VeraIvanova. Another glass of this champagne—bad asit is in this thieving city—would put a little fire intothose beautiful eyes of yours. A touch of color crept into the girls cheeks, butshe did not show any pleasure at the compliment. The money this wine costs, she said, would feedmanyofourpoorrefugeeswhodonot get enough toeat.
Text Appearing After Image:
IWAS dining inthe Palace Ho-tel at Pera—theEuropean quarter ofConstantinople, asmost people know—when I saw SergiusKovalevsky for thefirst time after fif-teen years, andcould hardly believe my eyes, though I was certain of him because ofthe poise of his head, rather lionlike, the broad, low forehead beneath a mass of black hair, anda square, rough-hewn face which had given himthe nickname of Danton, the hero of the FrenchRevolution, among the boys of an English school where Ihad been his special chum. We little guessed then that hewould play, for a short time at least, in violence as wellas in human weakness, the part of Danton in a revolutionmore frightful than that of France in 1789. He was not looking at me with any recognition, thoughonce or twice his eyes met mine, but at the girl next to me—Vera Ivanova—with a hungry gaze and a kind of mesmericintent to draw her eyes his way. But she did not see him,and sat for the most part staring at the tablecloth asthough her thoughts
