Stephen sidled over to improve his viewof the stage, and found himself cut off by ababy spotlight which was the moon. Hesidled back to his original position just intime to see that the girl in the garden hadrisen, and was dancing toward him andlaughing. In another instant her wholedemeanor had changed and she came sedatelypast the baby spotlight and sat down in a kitchen chair,a little apart from the two cigarette smokers. The youthin the dinner jacket glanced up from his newspaper. Rotten bad house—aint it? he inquired bitterly. The doorman nudged Stephens elbow. There she isnow. Stephen was suddenly diffident.
