n about to clean a gun, some tow iswrapped about the rod and enough petroleum pouredupon it to thoroughly moisten it ; it is then pushed in arotary manner through the barrel and back a dozen times, and the hemp taken out and unrolled, and the upper andlower ends of the barrel rubbed with the clean part, afterwhich it is thrown away. This removes the coarser por-tion of the dirt. The brush is then moistened thoroughlywith petroleum and twisted into the barrel, running it backand forth at least a dozen times, thus loosening the dirtthat is more firmly attached to it. The first operation isnow repeated, except that the hemp or tow on the rod isleft dry, and the rubbing with this must be continued inall directions as long as it comes out soiled. The use ofwire brushes is objectionable for cleaning guns, as thenumerous little steel points cut into the tube. Only softtow, hemp, woolen rags, or the like, should be used, as thepetroleum dissolves off the dirt sufficiently. 2-82 SCIENCE RECORD.
