Froissart thought the English amused themselves sadly; ana indeed, com-paring the Carnival in Louisiana with the Carnival in reckless Italy, one mightsay that the Americans masquerade grimly. There is but little of that wildluxuriance of fun in the streets of New Orleans which has made Italiancities so famous; people go to their sports with an air of pride, but not ofall-pervading enjoyment. In the French quarter, when Rex and his train enterthe queer old streets, there are shoutings, chaffings, and dancings ; the childrenchant little couplets on Mardi-Gras; and the balconies are crowded with spec-tators. But the negroes make a somewhat sorry show in the masking: theirevery-day garb is more picturesque. After the round through the great city is completed,the reflection of the torch-light on the sky dies away, and the Krewe betakethemselves to the Varieties Theatre, and present tableaux before the ball opens. This theatre, during the hour or two preceding the Mardi-Gras ball, offersone of the loveliest sights in Christendom.
