were399,360 barrels, and there are numerous oil refineries which prepare the crudepetroleum for export. The total exports of oil in 1873 were 3,470,995 gallons;and 66,415 bags of oil-cake were also sent abroad. Not so much progress has been made latterly in the iron trade as in otherbranches. In 1872 there were in the State twenty blast furnaces, producingupward of 54,000 tons, but the production in 1873 did not probably reach50,000 tons. The importations of English and Scotch iron to Baltimore areyearly decreasing. There are a number of bar and plate iron works in thecity which do a very heavy business. One company alone controls four plate-mills w^hich yield an annual product of a million dollars in value. The rolling-mills of the great railroad corporations are vast. A journey through the shopsof the Baltimore and Ohio railroad at Mount Clare is the work of a day. Tworegiments of laborers are employed.
