It was a pleas-ant sight to see so many, men and wom-en, old and young, Chinese and foreign,gathered at the altar at that early hour,in spite of the threatening day and theactual rain. Breakfast followed, and then, at nineoclock, the service of consecration. Thechurch was crowded. What it wouldhave been like if the weather had beenclear I do not know, but probably therewould have been an uncomfortably nu-merous rabble. As it was, many stoodoutside in the wet and peeped in throughthe windows. After Morning Prayer, the bishop ad-ministered confirmation to a class ofabout twenty. They really sang very well,and were remarkably different from thechoir I heard there nine years ago whenI went up with the Rev. Mr. Ingle,afterwards bishop.
