The figuresfor New York and Brooklyn represent the operation of the NewYork City Railway Company and of the Brooklyn Heights Rail-road Company, as reported to the Railroad Commissioners, andnot of all the lines in the respective territories. The final columnin this table presents the average for all the companies in theUnited States not doing a lighting business. The examination of this table reveals immediately two very in-teresting facts. The first is that Philadelphia is the only cityamong those selected in which an operating ratio of less than 50per cent obtains, and that it has an operating ratio of 7.6points less than the average rate in the Unifed States.
