eavier rails, new overhead work was put up, newcars were obtained, and a building containing shop,storage houses and offices erected. In fact, the old systemmight be said to have been replaced by a new one. As itstands now it is an ideal one for a small city. The recon-struction was carried out in such a thorough manner that itwould be difficult to find where any extensive improvementsor changes could be made to any advantage. The system comprises about 16 miles of single track. Thegreater portion of this lies on Second Street and connectsClinton proper with Lyons, which was formerly a separatelyincorporated town, but is now a part of Clinton. The twotowns have a combined population of about 25,000. A spurfrom the end of Second Street, or main line, continues toEagle Point Park, operated by the railway company, on thebluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and about four milesabove Clinton. TAMPING UNDER THE TIES entrance for the interurban line of the Iowa and IllinoisRailway Company, operating between Clinton and Daven-port. Power for the line is purchased from the Clinton GasCompany, which has installed a 350-kw Bullock generator tocare for the railway load. Several reasons combined to bring about a decision to re-construct the line. With the exception of the track con-struction the new work was done by the railway companyunder the supervision of R. M. Howard, general manager ofthe system. The tracks were rebuilt by the North AmericanRailway Construction Company, of Chicago. They are com- paratively heavy, considering the weight of the cars operatedon them. The main line on Second Street is built with 72-lb.6-in. T rails, while the Sixth Avenue line is of heavier con-struction, because the heavy interurban cars of the Iowa &Illinois Railway Company are operated over it. On thisline 80-lb. 7-in.
