ontain seven 800-kw, water- supply direct current to the motors in the repair shops locatedat this point. Government regulations within the District of Columbiaprohibit the use of the track return, so that within this sectionthe cars will be operated with a double trolley. This portionof the tracks, as well as that within the city of Baltimore, isat present operated by direct current, and the new cars aredesigned to operate on direct current over these sections ofthe line. As already stated, the present Washington, Baltimore &Annapolis Railway Company which is constructing the lineis quite distinct from the initial corporation. The new com-pany, under the head of its president, Geo. C. Bishop, hasconsiderably broadened the former plans. Land has beenpurchased for a wider right of way along the route, and newbridges are being built so that the roadbed will be excellent. The engineering work is in charge of the Roberts & AbbotEngineering Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, and contracts
Text Appearing After Image:
END AND SIDE VIEWS OF DETROIT PARLOR CAR cooled transformers, three with 33,000-volt secondaries andfour with 6600-volt secondaries, one of the latter transformersforming a reserve. At Academy Junction there will be four water-cooled trans-formers, 25 cycles, 800 kw, reducing the single-phase, 33,000-volt current of the transmission line to 6600-volt current suit-able for delivery to the cars. These transformers will supplythe current necessary for the Baltimore and the Annapolissections of the line. The sub-station at Academy Junction will be located ad-jacent to the car houses. For greater safety in inspectingand handling the cars, all of the trolley circuits in the carhouse will be arranged for 600-volt direct current, and forthis purpose two 300-kw motor generator sets will be in-stalled in the transformer sub-station, changing the 6600-voltalternating current to 600 volts direct current. The motorend of these motor generator sets will be connected directto the trolley circuits, o
