n, 16-cp lamps are placed overeach seat on small brackets extending slightly toward thecenter of the car from the inside of the lower portion ofthe deck sash. The lamps hang vertically and each bracketis provided with a holophane shade designed to give a uni-form illumination three feet from the floor. The floor of the car is covered with Greenwich, English,linoleum. The roof is covered with copper and groundedto the trucks. The earlier design contemplated pantograph trolley fora. c. and two-wheel trolleys for d. c, the same being placedat the rear end of the car, two being required, becausewithin the District of Columbia rail return is not allowed,and one wheel only being used when in Baltimore. Thedecision to use double-ended cars necessitated placing twotrolley wheels at each end, and the car was designed alsoto carry a pantograph, but owing to results obtained by theuse of trolley wheels on a. c. roads it was decided not toplace the pantograph at present. COMBINATION CAR FOR THE WASHINGTON, BALTIMORE & ANNAPOLIS ELECTRIC RAILWAY line (termed the A. YV. & B.), and excursion business intrains to Annapolis and to Bennings race track, near Wash-ington. The last item sometimes consists of steam coachesowned by the A. W. & B., or possibly obtained from connect-ing steam roads. In addition to this there are also freighttrains on the A. W. & B. Because of the different characters of service, includingsteam railway conditions and rolling stock, it was decidedthat all cars should have Master Car Builder couplers andautomatic air hrakes. even though such coupler makes itimpracticable to operate in trains on city streets except bythe use of a link or auxiliary radiating coupler. To avoidcarrying several sizes of repair and maintenance parts, itwas decided to have all trucks identical, except the trucksprings.
